The online world is a great place to learn, play games, communicate with family and friends, and get useful information. However, it also poses many dangers for children of all ages.
Because there are so many apps and websites, it can be difficult to know how to protect your child in the online world. You don’t need to be an expert on how to keep your child safe on everything they do online – this page is designed to give you some links to further information and advice.
Firstly, our curriculum.
We use the PurpleMash scheme which has a unit for all year groups (1-6) on online safety in the first half-term of each year. Threaded through the computing curriculum are eight areas which seek to equip children for digital life and the digital world.
Opportunities to discuss online safety occur within our PSHE curriculum, assemblies etc. We also take part in SID (Safer Internet Day) every year and extend this to an Online Safety Week.
There are many websites which also offer advice to parents and carers.
Advice for different apps and devices as well as more general advice can be found on the National College website. Click on the examples below or have a look at the National College website.
Other organisations designed to give information and advice include:
Common Sense Media provides advice, reviews and ratings on Apps as well as films and TV programmes.
Internet Matters offers child internet safety advice to parents and careers, including how to set controls on different apps and devices.
Thinkuknow is part of CEOP and has advice for parents and carers as well as online safety games for children.
Google family link is one of several apps which will link your child’s devices to yours allowing you to set limits and controls.
