Pupil Achievement
Objective:
To continue to monitor the progress, attainment and exclusion rate of pupils identified by Lewisham as being at risk of under-achievement / over-representation. To intervene in a targeted and/or systemic way if possible inequalities are identified.
Why:
Analysis of school achievement and exclusion data shows that, in virtually all areas, outcomes for children from Black and Minority Ethnic groups, particularly those of Black Caribbean heritage, at Marvels Lane does not follow the borough or national trend. As part of the signing up to Lewisham’s Race Equality Pledge, it is important that these outcomes are maintained.
How:
~ The school will ensure that all teachers are aware of the need to ensure that all children make at least
good progress in all subjects. In addition to the usual vulnerable groups, there will be a particular
focus on children from Black Caribbean and other Black and Minority Ethnic groups.
~ Block Tracking and Pupil Progress meetings will be used to identify any individual or groups of
children at risk of not making good progress.
~ Targeted and systemic interventions will be put in place where underachievement is identified.
Outcome:
Vulnerable group tracking will show that children from Black and Minority Ethnic groups, particularly those of Black Caribbean heritage, continue to achieve at a level at or above their peers, at school and national level. There are no school systems or practices that consciously or unconsciously have a negative impact on this.
Employment
Objective:
To ensure that systems for recruitment of staff and governors encourage suitable applicants from all ethnic backgrounds and that selection procedures are neither consciously or unconsciously biased.
Why:
To maximise the opportunities for Black and Ethnic Minority groups to be represented at all levels of school staffing, volunteers and the governing body.
How:
~ Establish a baseline of which ethnic groups are represented in each staff/volunteer/governor group.
~ Audit the publicity, application and selection processes for any conscious and unconscious bias.
~ Explore areas in which under-represented groups can be actively encouraged, while ensuring that
quality standards and equal opportunity are maintained.
Outcome:
The school’s recruitment processes do not have an inequitable negative impact on increased Black and Minority Ethnic representation at all levels of school staffing.
