In Year 3, phonics teaching is continued throughout this year group. As children are expected to complete the 6 Phases of ‘Letters and Sounds’ programme by the end of Year 2, we feel there are children who would benefit from consolidation of their phonics skills. Therefore, they are set in ability groups for 2 sessions of phonics/spelling per week.
From Year 4 to Year 6, phonics teaching is done discreetly in small groups or 1:1 during guided reading or early work time. The individual needs of these children are identified through assessment and tracking of progress.
