Home Reading

Children are expected to read at home every day. They choose a book to take home and record their reading in the yellow record, which is checked daily. In Y6, teachers have set up a ‘library’ system whereby books are recorded in a ‘library book’ kept in the classroom. This system is being trialled in one Year 4 class (Grape).

The underlying principle of our reading approach is that children will become fluent readers who can not only decode words but also understand and enjoy a variety of texts. The Rose Report, an independent review of the teaching of reading, describes this as a journey from ‘learning to read’ to ‘reading to learn, for pleasure and purpose’.
