Guided Reading

Guided Reading

This is when children are taught by the teacher or teaching assistant in groups of similar reading ability where they all have a copy of the same text. The teacher will have a particular reading focus, such as retrieving information, understanding what has happened, empathising with characters and explaining their actions. This is also an opportunity to listen and assess how well the children can read and understand. There will be discussion and a combination of reading as a group and individually. For Foundation Stage, this is usually done later in the year, as part of a carousel of activities, when the children have become more confident readers. For Year 1 and 2, there is a set timetable for guided reading every week.
